What Is a Dental Crown?
Dental crowns get their name because they are designed to literally “crown” or cap the entire visible portion of the tooth. This can repair damaged, decayed, or weakened teeth, but it can also improve the shape, shade, and overall appearance of your smile. We commonly use dental crowns to strengthen and protect teeth after removing decay or performing a root canal. However, some patients get crowns to improve their smile’s aesthetics. Our dental caps can be constructed out of various materials, including gold, porcelain bonded to metal, and ceramic, based on your needs.
The Dental Crown Process
Once we have decided that dental crowns are right for you, you’ll come into our office for the initial appointment. Our team offers CEREC 1-visit crowns, which can usually be completed in a single appointment. For traditional ones, however, we’ll typically need to prepare your tooth by removing a slight portion of enamel. Then, we will take impressions of the affected area, which are sent to a dental lab for the creation of your crown.
Since there is a short waiting period, we will provide you with a temporary crown to maintain your appearance. Lastly, you’ll come into our office for your permanent restoration. We’ll double-check that your crown fits and that you’re satisfied with the results before sending you on your way to enjoy your brand-new smile.
The Benefits of Getting a Dental Crown
Traditional dental crowns are perhaps the most common solution for restoring damaged or decayed teeth. These protective caps come with a multitude of advantages for your smile, such as:
- Reduced chance of complications in the future
- Enhanced comfort and biting power
- Preserve natural teeth to avoid extraction
- Results blend effortlessly with the rest of your tooth enamel
- Can last 15 years or more with proper care
