4 Holiday Beverages That Could Harm Your Smile
December 13, 2024
Cheers to the holidays! This season, when you raise your glass, be mindful of what you’re drinking. That’s because unfortunately when it comes to holiday beverages, not all of them are created equally. In fact, some of these clever concoctions can be bad for your smile. If you want to keep your teeth healthy and strong all year long, avoid these types of drinks this holiday season and beyond!
Eggnog
People have strong feelings about eggnog. You either love it or, well, you don’t. But if you are a fan, be careful if you indulge. Whether you add some bourbon or drink it plain, it’s packed with sugar that can cause cavities, as well as dairy which while it does have some calcium benefits, can give you bad breath if you don’t brush well after enjoying. Thus, be sure to drink water after, and don’t forget to brush and floss before bed that night!
Wine & Spirits
Alcohol such as wine, champagne, or other spirits is a festive tradition, however these drinks are also very acidic and can wear away the enamel of your teeth. They also are packed with sugar (yes, even beer) providing a double threat to your teeth if you’re not careful. Red wine can also leave stains and cause discoloration. Thus, be sure to alternate alcoholic drinks with water, and clean your teeth well when you’re done.
Holiday Punch
When it comes to your teeth, holiday punch is actually triple trouble. Not only is it acidic, but it’s also often packed with sugar. Worse yet, if its brightly colored (artificially or naturally) it can easily stain your teeth, too!
Hot Chocolate
Hot chocolate warms the body and the soul, but it’s loaded with sugar, and that’s before you even add all the festive toppings like whipped cream, marshmallows, or candy cane bits. Though this treat is great for kids and adults of all ages, if you decide to enjoy a mug, be sure to protect your teeth afterwards.
Remember, holiday beverages are a fun way to celebrate, but if you do so, make sure it’s in moderation, and that you’re cleaning your teeth well after enjoying, and be sure to head to the dentist for your regular, biannual exam and cleaning in 2025!
